Mentorship Programs at Prince George's Community College
Diverse Male Student Initiatives (DMSI)
This is a student program aimed at improving the academic success and overall development of the diverse male students who enroll at PGCC.
Faculty Mentoring Program
Through the Faculty-Student Mentoring Program, faculty, staff, and administrators are paired with students to share their knowledge and experiences.
Women of Wisdom (WOW)
A highly comprehensive and specialized program, Women of Wisdom is designed to provide unique opportunities for women students at Prince George’s Community College that enhance their academic, personal, and professional development in a holistic environment.
Learning Outcomes
Students who are mentored benefit by:
- Connecting with their Prince George’s Community College peer mentor or professional mentor at least four times per semester;
- Developing at least three S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely) goals per semester — two academic learning goals and one professional development goal;
- Defining the elements of a mentorship relationship at the end of the first semester;
- Articulating at the end of the academic year at least one way in which their experience as a mentee supported their academic and professional development; and
- Transitioning successfully from their first year to their second year.
Roles/Responsibilities/Expectations of PGCC Mentors
- Connect with their mentee at least four times per semester;
- Assist their mentee in shaping and defining an appropriate mentoring relationship;
- Inform their mentee of the range and scope of experiences available at the college. That includes academically, professionally, and socially;
- Assist their mentee in developing at least three S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely) goals per semester — two academic learning goals and one professional development goal;
- Support their mentee in addressing and overcoming barriers that affect academic success;
- Refer their mentee to college offices and personnel, as needed;
- Advise their mentee regarding college policies and procedures; and
- Complete a mentoring assessment of their mentee.
