Multiple Measures to Satisfy College Readiness

Prince George's Community College (PGCC) accepts the following additional measures which could exempt students from all or part of the placement test by satisfying college readiness. After being admitted to the College, read each section to determine if you qualify for any additional measures. Some measures of readiness may require testing staff to verify a photo ID.

If you need to take a placement test, please use these placement test instructions. Many students may still need to take all or part of the tests, even after satisfying one or more forms of readiness.

Submit Your High School GPA

PGCC will grant waivers for U.S. public high school graduates with an unweighted and cumulative (career) final GPA of 2.6 or higher on a 4-point scale. This waiver is only granted if the student spent at least 4 years enrolled in a US high school and earned their diploma within the past 5 years. The waivers satisfy English readiness, allowing students to enroll in EGL-1010, and Math readiness for enrollment in a math course up to and including MAT-1250.

Students who received an A or B grade in Algebra 2 (or an equivalent high school math course) are eligible to enroll in MAT-1350.

Follow the steps below to submit your GPA:

  1. Obtain a paper or online copy of your final high school transcript with an unweighted and cumulative final GPA. Some schools may call this the "career" GPA.
  2. If you only have an unofficial or unsealed paper copy, please scan or take a clear, readable photo of your documents.
  3. Contact Admissions and Registration to inquire about your transcript
    1. If you have a sealed paper transcript, please come in person.
    2. Online transcript services like Parchment may take several days to send your transcript to PGCC. Please confirm your order status before contacting Admissions and Registration.
    3. If you have a PDF or scan, you may be able to submit your transcript following an online appointment.

Submit Your GED Test Scores to PGCC

If you would like to take prep classes for the GED test, please visit the PGCC National External Diploma Program (NEDP) site.

Prince George's Community College has opportunities for students who earned a U.S. diploma by completing the GED Test. This diploma fulfills ability-to-benefit requirements for financial aid and may satisfy all or part of college readiness, provided the individual scores are high enough. Currently, the requirement to earn a diploma is a score of 145 or higher on all four sections of the GED Fifth Test Series (2014 or later).

The GED Diploma is an ESL Waiver

Any international student with a U.S. GED diploma is also exempt from all ESL placement tests and coursework. There is no time limit on this ESL waiver for GED students. However, they must take a placement test to satisfy Reading, English, and Math readiness. Students with GED exemptions may also use other exemptions granted by the College, if they qualify.

The GED Test and College Readiness

The College grants additional waivers from the placement test based on high scores from two sections of the GED Fifth Test Series (from 2014 and later), allowing students to enroll in college-level courses.

  • A score of 165 or higher on the Reasoning Through Language Arts section satisfies both English and Reading readiness, allowing enrollment in EGL-1010
  • A score of 165 or higher on the Mathematical Reasoning section satisfies Math readiness up to and including MAT-1350.
  • The College does not grant exemptions for the other two sections at this time.

The College can only grant placement test waivers for GED test scores up to five (5) years old. We can only accept scores from official transcripts from the GED test website and there is a fee for ordering GED transcripts. You may come on campus to submit a printout of the score report after showing your photo ID. You may also download the official GED transcript PDF and attach it to an email to testingcenter@pgcc.edu with your name and PGCC student ID number.

Prince George's Community College (PGCC) grants waivers from the placement test based on college-ready SAT scores, allowing students to enroll in college-level, credit courses.

  • A score of 480 or higher on the SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing test satisfies English readiness, allowing enrollment in EGL-1010.
  • The SAT Mathematics test may satisfy multiple levels of Math readiness, based on the score. Higher level Math courses may have additional prerequisites for enrollment.
    • A score of 530 or higher allows enrollment in MAT-1130 and MAT-1140.
    • A score of 550 or higher allows enrollment in MAT-1250 and MAT-1350.
    • A score of 570 or higher allows enrollment in MAT-1360, MAT-2160, and MAT-2210.
    • A score of 600 or higher allows enrollment in MAT-2410.

The College can only accept SAT scores up to five (5) years old. Please do not send scores from tests taken more than five (5) years ago. Use the College Board website to send your SAT scores to PGCC. The College Board charges different fees to send test scores, based on the test date. Official score reports are more expensive for students who have been out of high school for at least a year. Many students may qualify for a fee waiver from their high schools. The SAT score reporting code for Prince George's Community College is 5545.

    • A score of 24 or higher allows enrollment in MAT-1360, MAT-2160, and MAT-2210.
    • A score of 28 or higher allows enrollment in MAT-2410.

The College can only accept ACT scores up to five (5) years old. Please do not send scores from tests taken more than five (5) years ago. ACT charges a minimum fee of $18.50 to send scores, based on the test date. Use the ACT website to send your ACT scores to us, and please note that the ACT college code for Prince George's Community College is 1731.

Transfer Credit Exemptions

Your completed courses, from other accredited colleges or universities, may already satisfy the College's readiness requirements. This will exempt you from some or all of the placement test after you transfer those credits to Prince George's Community College. You must have successfully completed at least one transferable course at your previous school and submitted your transcript for evaluation. If you have any additional evidence of college readiness, please contact an advisor, who will give you instructions for the best way to submit it.
