Program Overview

The Medical Billing Specialist certificate introduces students to the billing and reimbursement methodologies for health insurance and the health industry.

In this program, students will learn medical terminology, data entry into practice management systems, claim preparation, submission and adjudication of claims, and the processing of payments and receipts within the legal and regulatory guidelines as a biller in an outpatient setting, physician's office, or medical clinic.

Job Outlook

According to the Department of Labor, of medical records specialists is projected to grow 7 percent from 2021 to 2030 with approximately 14,900 openings projected each year. In May 2021, the median annual wage for medical records specialists was $46,660.

Prerequisites Needs
  • Must take the reading comprehension placement test and obtain a score of 243 or higher, or provide proof of college credits (for more information on placement testing, click here).
  • Must have internet access.
  • Must be 18 or older to take the AAPC or CPB certification exams.
