Honors Program Mission

The mission of the Prince George's Community College Honors Program is to promote the intellectual growth and enrichment, civic engagement, and personal development of academically accomplished students.

To provide academic challenge and support through Honors courses and unique opportunities, events, and benefits that enhance students' educational experiences.

Qualifications to Join and Maintain Eligibility

Students may be admitted to the Honors Program based on their scores on the college’s placement examination, as well as their high school or college grade-point average. Current college students’ transcripts will also be reviewed regarding mathematics and English.

To find out if you are eligible, simply complete the program application located on the Honors Academy Application or stop by the Honors Program office in Lanham Hall, Room 102A.

Prerequisites for incoming high school students :
  1. Minimum 3.2 GPA; or
  2. Accuplacer Reading minimum score 263 and WritePlacer minimum score 6; or
  3. SAT Reading/Writing minimum score 500 and Math minimum score 500
  4. Unofficial high school transcript is required.
Prerequisites for current Prince George’s Community College students:
  1. Minimum 3.2 GPA.
  2. EGL-1010 grade of A or B.

Once admitted into the Honors Program, a student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher to take honors courses and to receive the benefits of program membership. A student must also complete a minimum of two honors courses or honors contracts during their tenure at the college.

The Honors Program offers honors versions of most general education course requirements. Honors courses are offered fall and spring semesters; they are not offered during intersession or summer sessions. All Honors Program students are required to sign and submit an Honors Program agreement.

Honors Program Outcomes

  1. Synthesize ideas and concepts across and within disciplines.
  2. Analyze arguments in an in-depth manner to reach sound conclusions.
  3. Express ideas and concepts precisely and persuasively for specific audiences, using a variety of media.
  4. Demonstrate appropriate and responsible scholarly standards of conduct.
  5. Participate in active civic engagement as an informed, independent adult.

Honors Society

Membership in the Honors Society is an excellent way to meet other students and get involved in college activities. Students who are admitted to the Honors Program automatically become members of the Honors Society. The Honors Society is continually seeking new members.
