Purple Light Nights Virtual Lighting Ceremony

LARGO, Md. (September 30, 2024) — Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) will recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October with a new edition of its annual television special, “Community Voices: Purple Light Nights Edition.” Produced in partnership with PGCC Campus Police, the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Domestic Violence Unit, and Prince George’s County Sheriff John D.B. Carr, the special will premiere on PGCC TV’s YouTube channel, Comcast Cable Channel 75, and Verizon FiOS Cable Channel 44 on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 8 p.m.

Focused on addressing domestic violence in our communities, this new edition features an interview with artist and teacher Malandela Zulu, who shares his mental health journey of healing after the loss of two students to domestic violence. Also, hear from domestic violence survivors who will share their stories and give healing advice. Each segment of this upcoming special is dedicated to continuing the conversation around domestic violence, honoring victims, and offering resources for those who are currently experiencing it.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, an average of 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner, accounting for 15% of all violent crimes in the United States. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please contact the Prince George’s County Family Justice Center’s hotline at 301-780-8008 or book an appointment online. PGCC also offers resources through its Wellness Center and Violence Prevention Center.
