Arlo Washington to screen Oscar-nominated documentary at Prince George's Community College

LARGO, MD (April 24, 2024) — Arlo Washington, president of People Trust Community Loan Fund and the first Black bank owner in the state of Arkansas, will headline the event, "Banking on the Big Screen: Movie Magic Meets Financial Empowerment" at Prince George’s Community College on Tuesday, April 30, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

"This is a unique event in recognition of National Financial Capability Month that promises to inspire, educate, and offer a fresh perspective on the power of community banking to transform lives,” Heath Carelock, program director of the Financial Empowerment Center at PGCC, said. “We are honored to host Mr. Arlo Washington and share his remarkable story with our students and the wider community."

The event is a part of the College’s 65th Anniversary speaker series celebrating the theme, “A Legacy of Commitment: Empowering People and Building Strong Communities.”

Washington’s Oscar-nominated documentary, “The Barber of Little Rock,” will be featured at the event as well as a discussion on Washington’s pioneering journey from a small-town barber to a historical figure and economic change agent. Washington’s film showcases his mission to foster economic opportunity in underinvested communities.

“Every community needs a quarterback, key players to make those critical plays that get federal, philanthropic, and private dollars to reach people without barriers,” Washington said. “Community development financial institution loan funds are those key players."

The conversation will also highlight the transformative power of Community Development Financial institutions and the role of community banking in bridging the racial wealth gap.

The Financial Empowerment Center at PGCC is committed to providing resources and education to empower individuals and communities to achieve financial stability and growth. This event underscores the FEC’s dedication to fostering discussions that highlight the significance of financial literacy and access as foundational elements for building generational wealth.
