Prince George's Community College Announces Black Food, Black Futures Festival
LARGO, Md. (October 2, 2023) Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) announced the upcoming Black Food, Black Futures Festival, a two-day festival celebrating Black food culture and raising awareness of food insecurities in Prince George’s County. This festival is hosted by the African American Studies Institute (AASI) with OurSpace World Inc. and funded by the Prince George’s County Community Partnership Grant. Black Food, Black Futures aims to spotlight those working towards food insecurity solutions and showcase the region’s best Black-owned food trucks, Black vendors, chefs, entertainment, and workshops.
The festival will be held on Friday, October 6, and Saturday, October 7, at the Center for Performing Arts on PGCC’s main campus in Largo, MD.
The Black Food, Black Futures Festival will feature a farm-to-table luncheon, cooking demos, food trucks, a children’s book signing, and a panel session with food equity leaders. Also featured will be workshops on growing herbs for tea and therapeutic cooking, a presentation of PGCC student research on food insecurity in Prince George’s County, and the showcasing of a cookbook on African American recipes collected by Bowie State University students.
“From Black farmers and chefs to students and community guests, everyone will have an opportunity to actively participate in food justice,” Iyelli Ichile, AASI director and a professor of African American studies at the College, said. “We are gathering to eat well and to engage with the ‘solutionaries’ in our community.”
Attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food donation that will be distributed to Capital Area Food Bank partners and the PGCC Cares Owl Market, an on-site food pantry that provides free groceries to students.
