Prince George's Community College Hosts 64th Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 20, at Show Place Arena

Detroit Pistons General Manager Troy Weaver To Deliver Keynote Speech

LARGO, Md. (May 3, 2023) – Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) is hosting its 64th Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 20, at 10 a.m. at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, MD. This year’s graduates are expected to number more than 1,000 in total.

“Celebrating our graduates is the highlight of the academic year at Prince George’s Community College,” said President Falecia D. Williams, Ed.D. “Student success is our highest priority, and nothing is more thrilling than seeing our students graduate and prepare to take on the world with the knowledge and skills they acquired here. As an institution, we dare to be extraordinary, and I already see reflections of that in the students who are about to grace our commencement stage.”

The keynote speaker for the 2023 Commencement is Troy Weaver, general manager for the Detroit Pistons basketball team and a Prince George’s Community College alumnus. Weaver was named general manager of the Detroit Pistons on June 18, 2020. In his role, he oversees all of the basketball operations for the Pistons. He played a season of basketball for PGCC and graduated from the College in 1991.

“I am honored to serve as the keynote speaker for the 64th Commencement Exercise at Prince George’s Community College,” said Troy Weaver. “It is a privilege to address the graduates and their families and friends on this significant occasion. As a graduate of PGCC, I share a common experience with the graduates, and I look forward to celebrating their accomplishments.”

The Distinguished Graduate from Prince George’s Community College, Fakhreya Mohammadi, will also speak at the ceremony. Ms. Mohammadi immigrated to the United States in November 2019 from Kabul, Afghanistan. She is a member of Women of Wisdom (W.O.W.), PGCC's Honors Society, Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She is passionate about education and empowering other girls to pursue their educational goals.

Additional speakers include Falecia Williams, Ed.D., president of Prince George’s Community College; Sidney Gibson, chair of Prince George’s Community College Board of Trustees; and Clayton Railey, Ph.D., executive vice president and provost of Teaching, Learning, and Student Success.

The graduating class of spring 2023 includes 198 students from the College’s Early and Middle College Programs, which enable first-generation and low-income students to earn high school diplomas, specialized certifications, and college degrees within four to six years.
