Prince George's Community College Supports Nursing Parents with New Mamava Lactation Pods
LARGO, Md. (July 6, 2023) – Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) announced today the addition of Mamava Lactation Pods at the Largo and University Town Center campuses to support nursing parents with private, freestanding, and comfortable lactation and pumping spaces.
In the spirit of the College’s core commitments, the new lactation pods help ensure parents who are students, staff, and faculty have equal access to resources and services to succeed. Additionally, the pods provide an innovative solution for nursing parents at the College.
“Mamava lactation pods are freestanding, mobile suites for parents to pump or lactate in public places or at work. Each pod is equipped with lockable doors, spacious seating, counter space, shelves, USB ports, and power outlets,” said Cathryn Camp, assistant vice president for student affairs. “We are thrilled to offer parents a private and secure option to nourish and bond with their child while at the College.”
The Largo campus received two lactation pods: one located on the second-floor lobby of the Center for Health Studies (CHS) and the other on the first floor of Lanham Hall near the elevators. UTC received one lactation pod located next to Owl Market. In addition to the lactation pods, the PGCC community will continue to have access to the Largo Wellness Center's private nursing and pumping area and refrigerator to store human milk during its regular operating hours.
Sasha Mayer and Christine Dodson, two active working moms who needed a private and suitable place to breastfeed their infants, founded Mamava in 2013. Mamava Lactation Pods are considered one of the leading experts in lactation space design.
To gain entry to the lactation pods, nursing or pumping individuals must download the free Mamava app available on Google Play and the Apple App Store. Each pod has a QR code linking to the app on the front door. A nursing person can securely find a lactation pod in a designated location from the app or the QR code. The lactation pods automatically lock upon entry to provide privacy and cannot be unlocked by another app user while occupied.
Mamava Lactation Pods were purchased with Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund III (HEERF III) dollars to help support student needs throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.
