Prince George's Community College Foundation Scholarship Golf Tournament Raises $152,560 to Support Student Success
LARGO, Md. (September 22, 2021) – The Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) Foundation held its biennial Scholarship Golf Tournament on September 9, at Oak Creek Golf Club in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. The event raised $152,560 to provide scholarship opportunities for students in need.
“We are grateful for the many enthusiastic partners who helped to make our Scholarship Golf Tournament an overwhelming success,” said Dr. Falecia Williams, Prince George’s Community College president. “Now more than ever, our students need access to opportunities that allow them to improve their outcomes and finish strong. Your support affirms that you share our vision of advancing the greater good for our region, and that gives us a reason to celebrate.”
Prince George’s Community College sponsors and friends participated in the event, including County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, Delegate Andrea Harrison, State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy, and representatives from Gilbane Building Company who participated as a Grand Slam Sponsor. CareFirst, a dedicated partner of the College for more than 25 years, joined as an Ace Sponsor. “It was wonderful to be able to participate in the golf outing,” said Tom Munns, director of municipal accounts for CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. “Despite the wet start to the day, we were happy to have a sunny finish on such a beautiful course.”
“As the region’s largest not-for-profit healthcare provider, our partnership with the College is a testament to our shared vision of providing high-quality educational and workforce development opportunities for future leaders and all students in Prince George’s County and the region we not only serve but also reside,” he added.
Alumni Ardania Williams of Lendana Construction, LLC and Dr. David E. Harmon of Harmon Orthodontics served as the event co-chairs, welcoming a host of corporate sponsors, alumni, faculty, and staff.
Prince George’s Community College serves a high percentage of low-income students, and 75% of current students identify as Black or Hispanic. Local, state, and national data show a higher unemployment rate and lower than average income in select areas from which the College recruits students.
The Scholarship Golf Tournament provides resources for the College to remove barriers in order to enhance and expand its efforts to address need-based aid for students and promote equitable outcomes for all learners, including those from underrepresented groups.
