Laurel College Center Partners with Morgan State University to Provide Accelerated Pathways to Psychology Bachelor’s Degree
Financial aid opportunities and scholarship incentives available to students
LARGO, Md. (June 10, 2021) – Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) announced today that Laurel College Center (LCC) has partnered with Morgan State University (MSU) to expand access to associate to bachelor’s degree pathways in psychology. Laurel College Center is one of Prince George’s Community College’s extension sites, which it shares with Howard Community College and several four-year institutions. The partnership offers a convenient location for students who graduate with an associate degree to complete Morgan State University psychology courses at Laurel College Center in Laurel, Maryland, without traveling to Morgan State’s main campus in Baltimore, Maryland. Although the program is geared mainly toward students who attend Prince George’s Community College and Howard Community College, the Morgan State psychology program at LCC is open to all students who have completed an associate degree and seek to pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
“This is an exciting opportunity for our psychology students to seamlessly complete a baccalaureate degree in their field,” said Nicole Currier, dean of Humanities, English, and Social Sciences. “Our collaboration with Morgan State University reflects our commitment to partnership-building. Colleges and universities nationwide would agree that our collective mission is to graduate students who are prepared to give back. It just makes sense to establish initiatives that are mutually beneficial across institutions.”
On May 15, Rosely Agramonte Marcial became the first student to graduate from the program with a Bachelor of Science in psychology. She describes the program as an overall amazing experience and found it to be very convenient. According to Marcial, “It allowed me to work full time and attend school full time.”
“The classes are small, and they allowed me to really learn from my teachers and get the attention I needed when I didn’t understand things.” Marcial described the classes as intimate and engaging.
Students admitted to the psychology program at Laurel College Center may also be eligible for the Transfer Incentive Program (TIP), which awards up to $2,000 per semester for a maximum of five semesters. The Transfer Incentive Program is a scholarship initiative designed for incoming degree-seeking community college transfer students.
To the program’s first graduate, this meant earning her degree without incurring any debt. “I received a $2,000 scholarship every semester,” said Marcial. “With the affordable prices at Morgan State, compared with other schools, I only had to pay $2,500-$3,000 per semester and graduated without student loans to pay back.”
Psychology is a broad field of study comprised of over 50 specialties. Students are equipped with skills in critical thinking, communication, research and analysis, and cultural competence. Graduates of Morgan State’s bachelor’s degree in psychology have pursued careers as medical doctors, lawyers, mental and public health providers, and entrepreneurs.
Laurel College Center’s partnership with Morgan State guarantees admission for Prince George’s Community College students who meet eligibility requirements, maximizing opportunities and accelerating pathways to a four-year degree for students throughout the state, saving them time and money.
