LARGO, Md. (December 15, 2021) – Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) partnered with GivingTuesday, a global day of giving, that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities, and organizations to encourage philanthropy and celebrate generosity, on Nov. 30. The College raised $57,871 in support of students, with 72% of the total dollars raised coming from faculty and staff.

Prince George’s Community College’s fundraising goal for its 2021 GivingTuesday campaign was $20,000, an increase over the previous year’s goal. Funds raised during the College’s 2021 GivingTuesday campaign support Champions of the Arts and other College initiatives that drive student success. Champions of the Arts enable a premier environment for expanded, comprehensive, and state-of-the-art expressions that support robust educational programming and celebrate the community's cultural vibrancy, including for underserved individuals.

“In the midst of a year of many challenges, our community’s support of Prince George’s Community College has only grown stronger,” said Brenda Mitchell, executive director of the Prince George’s Community College Office of Institutional Advancement. “We are grateful for everyone who showed up and showed out once again on GivingTuesday in support of our students. This momentum will carry us forward in a big way.”

Key highlights from the College’s GivingTuesday campaign include a $30,000 donation from United Way, $10,000 donation from Adelphi Friends Meeting, and $5,000 donations from Metropolitan A.M.E. Church, Washington D.C., and WesBanco. As part of the College’s overall efforts, faculty, staff, friends, and Delta Sigma Theta members joined together to raise $1,869 for the William H. Torain Memorial Scholarship. The new scholarship was created in honor of the father of Dr. Mirian Torain, associate dean of humanities, who passed away earlier this year.

Prince George’s Community College has a rich history of providing affordable, high-quality learning experiences for diverse populations. The College serves the greatest percentage of non-white credit students in the state of Maryland, with 68% of students identifying as Black and 13% identifying as Hispanic. According to the latest data, 51% of Prince George’s Community College students identify as “first-generation.”
