Prince George’s Community College Foundation Raises $40,181 in Support of Students on Give 8/28

Intro to Film Class StudentsLARGO, Md. (September 2, 2020) – Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) rallied together on Give 8/28, raising a total of $40,181 in support of PGCC students. The 24-hour Give 8/28 campaign, held annually on August 28 and sponsored by the Young, Black, and Giving Back Institute, promotes financial giving for black-led and black-benefiting nonprofits.

As a minority-serving institution, with more than 70% of students identifying as black, the College has a rich history of providing affordable, high-quality learning experiences for diverse populations. Prince George’s Community College faculty, staff, alumni, and corporate and foundation partners participated in the campaign, showing their solidarity for racial justice and equity.

“The continued demonstration of strength and compassion within our community of faculty, staff, alumni, and friends cannot be overstated and is greatly appreciated,” said Brenda Mitchell, executive director of the Office of Institutional Advancement. “While we continue to navigate this time of uncertainty, we’re thankful for those who keep the needs of our students at the top of their minds and close to their hearts. Our dedicated donors are helping students achieve their educational goals.”

Funds raised support the College’s Owl Emergency Response Fund, which was launched by the Prince George’s Community College Foundation to help students overcome immediate and emerging educational needs and hardships that pose barriers to their academic success.

Since 2018, Give 8/28 has raised thousands in support of black-led and black-benefiting nonprofits from a diverse group of organizations. Guided by its mission to educate, inspire, and empower black Gen-Xers and Millennials to invest in changing their communities through philanthropy, the DC-based Young, Black, & Giving Back Institute has sparked a movement against systematic racial injustice by investing in those who work directly in black communities to create positive change.
