Prince George’s Community College Foundation Raises $119,500 in Support of Student Success
Partners for Success Celebration transitions to virtual, expands public reach
LARGO, Md. (November 23, 2020) – The Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) Foundation held its biennial Partners for Success Celebration on Nov. 19, showcasing the many partnerships that serve to strengthen the College’s ability to fulfill its mission of providing a high-quality, affordable education for a diverse student population. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the celebration was held virtually, which allowed the event to reach a record number of attendees.
Prince George’s Community College’s 2020 Partners for Success Celebration was made possible by the support of a host of generous sponsors, including CareFirst, Comcast/NBC4/Telemundo 44, Educational Systems Federal Credit Union, and MGM National Harbor.
Like colleges and universities across the country, Prince George’s Community College, which serves the greatest percentage of non-white students in the state of Maryland, has felt the impact of COVID-19. The College’s donors and partners continue to play an increasingly critical role in ensuring that Prince George’s Community College students have access to the resources needed to be successful during the pandemic and beyond.
“We are excited to celebrate with our many partners who serve to strengthen our impact during this year’s virtual Partners for Success Celebration,” said Brenda Mitchell, executive director of the Office of Institutional Advancement. “There has never been a more important time for us to continue the work of preparing the next generation, and that’s something we cannot do alone. We are grateful for the generosity of our partners whose support makes possible what would not be otherwise,” she added.
The Partners for Success Celebration featured a live meet and greet with the ninth president of the College, Dr. Falecia D. Williams, and a diverse lineup of entertainment, pre-recorded live from the Prince George’s Community College Center for Performing Arts, including the Prince George’s Philharmonic, a special performance by the Ballet Theatre of Maryland with choreography inspired by the pandemic, and original showcases by Prince George’s Community College students and faculty. Special guests included Angela Alsobrooks, Prince George’s County Executive, and Todd Turner, Prince George’s County Council Chair, District 4.
One on the highlights of the event included a special tribute to the many donors who helped the Foundation raise $374,662, through its Owl Emergency Response Fund, to help students overcome immediate and emerging educational needs and hardships that pose barriers to their academic success. To date, more than 2,500 individuals with needs such as tuition, books, and food insecurity have been served.
