Donation from Children's National Hospital Enables Prince George's Community College to Enhance Hands-on Radiography Training
LARGO, Md. (August 24, 2020) – Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) announced today that it has received a donation from the Diagnostic Imaging and Radiology Division of Children’s National Hospital in support of its Radiography Program. The GE OEC C-Arm fluoroscopic unit donation will enable PGCC students to receive enhanced hands-on training in preparation for careers in radiologic sciences. The C-Arm will be operational starting in the fall 2020 semester.
Fluoroscopy, the study of moving body structures, is a type of medical imaging most commonly associated with X-rays. Portable fluoroscopic studies using the C-Arm in the operating room are an important part of clinical education nationwide for students enrolled in radiography programs.
Many students find portable fluoroscopic studies challenging due to the intimidating nature of the operating room and the amount of practice needed to master use of the C-Arm. The addition of the C-Arm unit will enable PGCC students to gain valuable hands-on operating room experience in a laboratory setting prior to performing these procedures in a clinical setting.
“We deeply appreciate the generosity of Children’s National Hospital,” said Angela Anderson, dean of the Health, Wellness, and Hospitality Division at Prince George’s Community College. “This donation will allow the Radiography Program to enhance the on-campus training component for students significantly, making them better prepared to enter the workforce immediately upon graduation.”
Children’s National Hospital has been a clinical affiliate of many of the Health Sciences Programs at Prince George’s Community College for more than 20 years. In addition to supporting the College’s Radiography Program, the C-Arm will complement the interdisciplinary experience for students enrolled in associated healthcare programs such as surgical technology and nursing. Prince George’s Community College’s Radiography Program, established in 1972, is the College’s first Allied Health Program.
Prince George’s Community College is offering all of its classes virtually for the fall 2020 semester. Select hybrid courses allow students completing lab-based work, including those enrolled in the Radiography Program, to learn both online and in person. Face-to-face sessions are structured to enforce social distancing and safety in accordance with coronavirus precautions.
