Six PGCC Students Named Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship Semifinalists

LARGO, Md. (Feb. 8, 2019) -- Six Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) students have been named semifinalists for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation scholarship. They were among those chosen from a pool of nearly 1,500 applicants from 45 states and Washington, D.C.

Alebioso recalls being in class on the first day back from winter break when she received the email saying “Congratulations.” Kim Johnson, manager, Special Scholarships Program, was the first person she told. She said Ms. Johnson was very supportive throughout the application process.
“I’ve had peers who’ve gone through the process before at PGCC and I watched them finish the process and not become finalists, and I told myself that I want to work on the application for a long time,” she said. She worked on the application for six months and nervously awaits to hear if she will be named a finalist.
Tatchim, who is considering transferring to University of Maryland, College Park, Johns Hopkins University, Princeton University, and Stanford University, was also shocked at the news. “Wow! Really, nothing is impossible,” he thought when he saw the email.
The scholarship is one of the most prestigious awards for community college students who transfer to top four-year colleges to complete their bachelor’s degrees.
Selected scholars will be announced in April with the chance to receive up to $40,000 per year to attend an accredited four-year college of their choice.
