Student Leaders Advocate for Community Colleges

LARGO, Md. (February 1, 2018) - Fifteen Prince George's Community College (PGCC) student leaders will travel to Annapolis on Wednesday, February 7 to advocate for community colleges and the important role they have in higher education. The group will encourage support for full funding for the state's portion of community college operating budgets, the Maryland Promise program, capital improvement program/facility renovations, and technology updates. Each year, hundreds of students from the state's 16 community colleges participate in Student Advocacy Day.
"We are committed to helping our students complete their education, and maintaining proper funding is an important part of reaching that goal," said Dr. Charlene Dukes, president of Prince George's Community College. "We look forward to engaging with our elected officials and working with them to keep higher education affordable and accessible for our students."
The day begins at 9:00 a.m. with a student rally and welcome in the President's Conference Room in the Miller Senate Office Building. After introductions and opening speeches, students will take a group photo before meeting with senators and delegates to share personal stories about how community colleges impact and empower their futures.
According to Maryland Association of Community Colleges, each year nearly 500,000 residents attend one of Maryland's 16 community colleges, in both credit programs and continuing education and workforce development courses.
