PGCC Holds Ribbon-Cutting for Lanham Hall

LARGO, Md. (June 28, 2018) – Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) re-opened Lanham Hall, one of the college’s oldest buildings, on Thursday, June 22. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to commemorate the new building and the college’s continued expansion to better serve students.
Lanham Hall is the second of a trio of construction and renovation projects strategically planned and designed to meet student needs and improve efficiency at the college. The building’s renovations include 19,000 additional square feet, making Lanham Hall a permanent home for Academy of Health Sciences, Maryland’s first middle college. In addition, student support services and Workforce Development and Continuing Education (WDCE) offices are all housed in the renovated building, in one centralized location.
Student support services, including TRiO, a federally-funded program that offers academic support to students, were housed in multiple buildings prior to the renovation. Director of Student Support and TRiO Programs Roosevelt Charles said they’re now able to do things they didn’t have the capacity to do in the past. It’s also going to “bring a look and feel to students and portray to them that we’re very intentional with our services,” he said.
Academy of Health Sciences and WDCE students, faculty, and staff share Mr. Charles’ excitement for the new building and the challenges that it will help to resolve. Academy of Health Sciences student Stephanie Soto is excited that the new space in Lanham Hall offers a lot of space for all of the students to come together in addition to the opportunities to get more assistance for what she says is a “rigorous program.”
The renovation of Lanham Hall was funded by the state and the county. Secretary of Education James D. Fielder, Maryland State Senator Paul Pinsky, and Vice Chair of Prince George’s County Council Todd Turner attended the ribbon-cutting and highlighted the importance of education as well as commended PGCC for investing in student success and striving for excellence.
The ribbon-cutting gave guests the opportunity to tour the new space and preview technological features that will elevate the learning and teaching environment. A few renovations still need to be completed, but the building will be open and fully operative when students return in the fall.
