LARGO, Md. (May 11, 2018) -- Prince George’s Community College's (PGCC) Nursing Department will celebrate 50 years of excellence in nursing education on Friday, May 18, 2018. The celebration will take place one week after National Nurses Week, which honors nurses across the U.S. for the work that they do and educates the public about nurses’ role in health care.
The celebration builds upon the National Nurses Week’s theme, “Nurses Inspire, Innovate, and Influence,” which is what nurses are trained to do at PGCC.
"The nursing program confirmed what I thought I knew about myself,” said Sierra Wright, PGCC class of 2016. “It confirmed that I love making a change in people's lives and putting a smile on their faces. It gave me the tools to do that and so much more. Prince George’s Community College's nursing program gave me the keys to my destiny."
More than 5,000 nursing students have graduated from PGCC over the past 50 years. Many have obtained full-time employment with healthcare facilities throughout Prince George’s County and the Washington-Baltimore region thanks to partnerships with healthcare industry leaders and continuous improvement in technology.
The state-of-the-art Center for Health Studies building, which opened in 2012, made it possible to provide nursing students with real-life, hands-on experience in over 26 simulation classrooms. Prince George’s Community College nursing students continue to graduate more prepared than ever to meet the labor needs for health care facilities and transform the health and well-being of the entire community.
The nursing program at PGCC is one of the most popular and successful programs at the college. Each year, the program graduates between 128 and 140 students.
“I have learned so much, have made lifelong friends, and have a career doing something I love,” said Carly Fridell, PGCC class of 2015, and also the first recipient of the Cathy Jo Land Nursing Scholarship. “I am forever grateful for the teaching faculty and environment that helped me become the best nurse I could be.”
Prince George’s Community College will recognize Haden and Cathy Jo Land for their support of the nursing program, in addition to The Powell Family, and Kaiser Permanente, who provided a $10,000 sponsorship for the celebration.
The celebration will take place from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Center for Health Studies Atrium. Registration and tours will begin at 4:00 p.m. The program will begin at 5:00 p.m. and will feature remarks from PGCC President Dr. Charlene Dukes as well as a video highlighting the past, present, and what’s to come for nursing education at PGCC. A reception will follow at 6:00 p.m.
