Prince George's Community College (PGCC) is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), which is a global accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education. Accreditation is a voluntary, self-regulated, peer review process for assuring and improving the quality of higher education. Colleges are evaluated as to how well they meet specified, rigorous standards, in light of their stated mission, on the basis of: (1) their self-evaluation called a Self-Study Report and (2) a site visit that aims to clarify, verify, and amplify the contents of the self-study. After receiving initial accreditation, colleges in the MSCHE region are reviewed every eight years with a mid-point peer review after four years. Additionally, annual reports are submitted to share progress. PGCC’s last self-study and site visit occurred in 2015, with the next visit scheduled for March 2024.
In addition, MSCHE, as a federally recognized accreditor, is required to verify that its member institutions comply with accreditation-relevant federal regulations in four primary areas. As part of the self-study or periodic review process, colleges must respond with regard to each of the eight areas through submission of the Verification of Compliance with Accreditation-Relevant Federal Regulations Report. The most recent report was submitted in January 2015 through the submission of the Institutional Federal Compliance Report. The most recent report was submitted in January 2024.
The self-study process at PGCC allows the College to reflect on the past and set clear directions for its future. It has affirmed the College’s commitment to student success and completion as well as the pivotal role the College plays in the education, workforce, and economic well-being of the county and state.
