Drawing of a caduceus on a Star of Life

A medical emergency is an injury or illness that is acute and poses an immediate risk to a person’s life or health or that may have a long-term health effect.

This might be due to an accident, pre-existing condition, illness or allergic reaction.

  1. Call the Department of Public Safety at 301-546-0111 and advise them of your location and the nature of the victim's illness or injury. If the injury is life-threatening, call 911 first.
  2. If trained and comfortable, you can provide first aid until medical assistance arrives.
  3. Do not attempt to move a victim unless their life is in immediate danger.
  4. Comfort the victim, and assure them that help is on the way.
  5. Don't allow yourself to be exposed to chemicals, electric shock, fire, flood, or body fluids. If possible, wear protective equipment, or wait for professional assistance.
  6. Remain after help arrives to provide needed information.
  7. If you suspect that you have been exposed to an infectious disease advise your supervisor and seek medical attention immediately.

Note: Prince George's Community College buildings are equipped with Automated External Defibrillator (AED) devices and available for anyone to initiate action until medical assistance arrives on the scene.
